Panosteitis (growing pains)

This is not a disease as such, but is included here because it is quite common in dobermanns and causes worry to puppy owners. Like all large breeds, dobermanns grow very fast in the first 9-12 months of their life. Some puppies become lame occasionally or frequently, causing concern to their owners. This is due to their rapid growth and is usually treated by an anti-inflammatory such as Metacam, plus rest. It is not thought to cause any lasting problem if handled sensibly. There are anecdotal reports that puppies fed on a diet that contains a large proportion of raw meat are less likely to suffer from this.
